For more than a decade, we’ve been building APIs primarily for people.
Developers consumed them. Mobile applications called them. Web applications orchestrated them. System integrators connected them.
The consumer was ultimately human.
That assumption is changing faster than many organizations realize.
As AI agents become more capable, we are entering a new era where APIs will increasingly be consumed not only by developers and applications, but by autonomous software agents capable of discovering, understanding, reasoning about, and executing tasks on behalf of users.
The question is no longer:
How do we build APIs for applications?
The question is:
How do we build APIs for intelligent agents?
The Next Consumer of APIs
The first generation of digital transformation connected systems.
The second generation connected businesses.
The next generation will connect autonomous agents.
Imagine an AI agent tasked with:
- Booking travel
- Procuring software licenses
- Managing cloud infrastructure
- Creating development environments
- Processing invoices
- Scheduling resources
- Managing supply chain transactions
In each scenario, the agent needs access to systems through APIs.
But unlike traditional applications, these agents are making decisions, interpreting responses, and dynamically determining next steps.
The API is no longer merely a technical interface.
It becomes an execution layer.
From Human-Friendly to Agent-Friendly
Historically, API design focused on developer experience.
We optimized for:
- Documentation
- SDKs
- Authentication
- Performance
- Reliability
Those remain critical.
However, AI agents introduce a different requirement:
Machine understanding.
Agents must be able to understand:
- What an API does
- When it should be used
- Which parameters are required
- What business outcome it achieves
- What side effects might occur
This means metadata, descriptions, schemas, and governance become significantly more important.
The organizations that expose clear, structured, discoverable APIs will have a significant advantage.
Why OpenAPI Matters More Than Ever
For years, OpenAPI specifications have been viewed primarily as developer documentation.
In the agentic era, OpenAPI becomes something much more important.
It becomes machine-readable intent.
AI systems are increasingly capable of:
- Reading OpenAPI specifications
- Understanding available functions
- Determining execution paths
- Selecting appropriate services
The quality of an organization’s API descriptions may directly influence how effectively AI agents can interact with their business capabilities.
Poor documentation becomes an operational bottleneck.

As AI agents gain more autonomy, governance becomes central to the discussion.
Organizations must address questions such as:
- Which actions can agents perform?
- What approval processes are required?

Increasingly, I believe we should be talking about the Agentic Enterprise.
In an Agentic Enterprise:

- Decisions become increasingly data-driven.
- Repetitive tasks are automated.
- Knowledge becomes more accessible.
- Software delivery accelerates.
- Human expertise focuses on high-value decisions.
This transformation will not happen overnight.
But the building blocks are already here.
Organizations are investing in AI copilots, intelligent automation, modern DevOps platforms, Engineering Lifecycle Management, and scalable computing infrastructure.
The next step is connecting those capabilities through well-governed, discoverable APIs.
A New Responsibility for Technology Leaders
Technology leaders face a critical challenge.
Many organizations still view APIs as technical plumbing.
In reality, APIs are becoming strategic business assets.
The APIs we design today may become the primary interface through which future AI agents interact with our products, services, and partners.
That changes the conversation.
API strategy is no longer solely an architecture discussion.
It becomes a business strategy discussion.
Organizations that recognize this shift early will be better positioned to participate in the next wave of digital transformation.
Final Thoughts
The software industry has undergone multiple platform shifts.
Mainframes.
Client-server.
Web.
Mobile.
Cloud.
Today, we are witnessing another transition.
The rise of intelligent agents is redefining how software is built, delivered, and consumed.
APIs sit at the centre of this transformation.
They are evolving from integration mechanisms into execution platforms for autonomous systems.
The organizations that prepare now will be best positioned for the future.
The question is not whether AI agents will become part of enterprise operations.
The question is whether our APIs are ready when they arrive.
